Toppers Story – Ranchi Girl Nancy Sahay, IAS

Nancy Sahay a 25 year old girl from Ranchi secured All India Rank 36 in the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination in the year 2013.  Becoming an IAS is just a beginning into a more diverse world. She would bring positive changes in every area. Now Nancy Sahay is a 2014 batch IAS officer of Jharkhand cadre.

Nancy says, “Challenges are there in every step of life but with confidence, commitment and dedication all the difficulties can be conquered easily. So, doing right thing at right time and in right way holds the key of success”.

Family Background

Nancy’s father Mr. Prakash Sahay is a Professor at Yogada College and he teaches political science. Nancy got married to Varun Ranjan IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh 2014 batch.

Educational Background

Nancy Sahay completed her primary schooling from Loreto Convent School in 2005. She then did her secondary schooling from DAV Shyamali in 2007. And she got Graduated in Electronics and Communication from BIT-Mesra in 2011.

Though she got a job in Gurgaon in 2011, she left her job after few months to start preparing for Civil Services Exam in New Delhi.

Attempt by Nancy Sahay

Nancy Sahay cleared UPSC Civil Services Examination in her very first attempt and was very happy to have cracked it.

Optional Paper

Nancy Sahay opted for Public Administration as her optional paper. She developed an ample interest in this paper especially which covers Indian Administration. She thought this subject would give her a good insight of the entire system, the basics on which administration functions. Nancy says,”its your preparation and hardwork that makes you do well in the examination”.

Tips for the Aspirants

  • The UPSC exam is not a course and everything depends on interest, determination and preparation.
  • Try to play upon the strengths and work upon the weaknesses as much as possible in the subjects required.
  • Should work on areas which are burning issues of today- for example the environment and culture.
  • Solve model papers and thereby prepare yourself for that exam by referring to NCERT books.

A piece of advice for the aspirants, Nancy shares

“the zeal to get into services and the passion of serving your nation is the single biggest motivating factor one should have to crack this examination”.
