Family Background

Tom’s family lives in Punnakkad near Kozhenchery in Pathanamthitta district. His father George Varghese is the the parish priest of St Paul’s Marthoma Church at East Muthoor in Thiruvalla. His mother Annie is a house maker. His elder sister Aida Ajith is a dentist in the US. Brother Georgy Sam Varghese is an engineer at Oracle and is also working in the US.

Educational Background

Johny Tom Varghese studied till Class 8 at Bethany Academy, Vennukkulam, near Thiruvalla, and did his higher secondary schooling at the St. Thomas Residential School in Thiruvananthapuram. He moved to Chennai for his B.Sc. in Mathematics at Madras Christian College and PGDM from PSG Coimabtore. Mr. Varghese later worked at the Institute of Social Sciences in New Delhi as a research associate for two years.

Optional Paper

Johny Tom Varghese kept Sociology as his optional paper as his aim was to make people’s life better, and have been associated with social work and kept himself busy in learning about life.

Attempts by Johny Tom Varghese

Johny Tom Varghese came out with flying colors in his third attempt at the Civil Services Examination. In first attempt he wrote the Main Examination; in second attempt he could not clear even Preliminary Examination. Finally, in third attempt, he achieved success.

How he got motivated?

His friends suggested him to try for UPSC Exam. Civil Service is the biggest player in the development of the country that struck him deep inside and realized that probably there is more human interface to efforts related to social work; so, then he decided to appear in Civil Services Examination.

Tips for the Aspirants

  • Study 4-5 hours with full concentration and devotion with fixed time table.
  • Make judgement of things where you lack and improve your preparation plan.
  • Read papers, articles, reports which will keep you updated for current affairs.
  • Its a long process so have patience within yourselves.

  1. I’m Mobin Jokhiya. I am from Jamnagar, Gujrat.
    I have cleared my 12th in English with 83% and Now doing F.Y. B.com in English medium and also doing a Part time job for studying.
    I want to be an IPS or IAS officer somehow…!
    I’m doing my best for preparing for this UPSC exam but With this Job I can’t spare so much time for Reading as I suppose.
    And The job is also necessary for me to do.. So With Job, How can I do Preparation in limited time for achieving my Goal of clearing the UPSC exam ?

    Please Guide Me…..

    • heyy there is nothing to worried. there are many toppers who cleared upsc without leaving job. its good that u are in first year…so you have sufficient time for preparation…read atlest 5 hours a day. start with ncerts… clear all your bacis,,, than go for refference books..conceptual clarity is must for upsc…Read one english newspaper the hindu or indian express.. read one magazine.. youjana or kurushektra… make notes….. and revise again and again… and last…. find some toppers on internet who cracked upsc without leaving their job… follow anyone of them… stick to one strategy and one source… all the very best!!!! hope it helps 🙂

    • hey there is nothing to worried….there are many toppers who cracked upsc without leaving job…. All u need to is concentrate your all focus in upsc only read atleast 5 hours a day…. Always stay selfmotivated…there are many candidate who clear this exam .. Find them on internet…and follow anyone of their strategy.. All d best!!

  3. I’m vignesh m. I’m from palakkad, kerala .I want to be IPS officer .I have cleared my bsc agriculture with 75%.
    I don’t have a good educational background.im a average student in the class
    > I have a small interest in pg agri business management (mba).
    How I want to prepare for IPS
    studying 2 year pg will effect me in any way ?

  4. its good that u are in first year…so you have sufficient time for prepartion.. At this stage clear basics first of all…read newspaper the hindu or indian express ..make notes,,,, revise them.. You have 2 years for prepartion… Devote all your energy in it and crack upsc in very first attempt…. Hope it helps!!
