Lord Hardinge (1844-48)
First Sikh War: During Lord Hardinge tenure, a war between the British and Sikhs was caused in 1845 when Sikhs tried to annex the territories lying on the other side of Sutlej. Sikh army was defeated and the Sikh Kingdom was brought under British protection. Kashmir ruled by the Sikhs came under the British and was placed under Raja Gulab Singh, the ruler of Jammu.
