Lord William Bentick (1828-35)

Reforms: Lord William Bentick is remembered in India even today for his reformative measures. He abolished the practice of Sati in 1829 and suppressed Thugee. English was introduced as the medium of higher education at the instance of Thomas Babington Macaulay, a member of Governor-General’s council. Indians were appointed in higher services.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy: He was a religious and social reformer and founder of Brahmo Samaj. He helped William Bentick in abolishing Sati and in introducing many other reforms.

Lord Metcalfe (1835-36 A.D.) : He succeeded Lord William Bentick for a short time.
