Lord Lytton (1876-80)

During Lord Lytton tenure, the British forces invaded Afghanistan in 1878 because SherAli, the ruler of that country was suspected of conspiring with the Russians. SherAli fled away and his son was forced to sign the Treaty of Gandamak whereby he was prohibited from signing any treaty with any other power. On September 3,1879, Afghan army revolted which again caused the British invasion. Abdur Rehman, Sher Ali’s nephew, was made ruler,Lord Lytton was succeeded by LordRippon (1880-84) who gave some powers to local bodies.
