New Spinal Implant Helps Disabled Walk Again

Scientists at London’s Guy’s and St. Thomas Hospital announced on March 3, 2013 the development of a revolutionary spinal implant that allows crippled parents to walk again. The new device will go a long way in benefiting people suffering from the agony of spinal injury. The implant is based on the principle of spinal cord stimulation, which works by disrupting and thereby drastically reducing pain signals to the brain. The technique involves implanting wires near the spinal cord, linked to a generator. This gives off high-frequency electrical impulses, which the patient does not feel.

The device has opened up a new avenue in pain reduction practices. It has so far been tested on people suffering from severe back and leg pain caused by spinal injuries. Experts, however, said that as the implant is completely free from side effects, it can also be used to treat other painful conditions such as migraine and nerve damage.
