Vivek Kumar said, “I am very delighted to have cracked the Union Public Service Commission Exams. I did my MBBS and became a doctor but my interest was always in Civil Services.”

“It is all about what kind of values and ethics have been inculcated in children by parents. I wanted to break this myth that children of MLAs and MPs do not study and turn into brats.” the JD(U) MLA said.

Family Background of Vivek Kumar

Vivek Kumar comes from Nabinagar in Aurangabad. His father Virendra Kumar Singh, JD (United) MLA from Nabinagar in Aurangabad is too elated at his son’s achievements. His mother is a house maker. “Every father wants his son to do better in life than himself. I cannot describe how proud I feel that my son has achieved this feat,” a proud father said.

Initially, his father felt his son never studied. “I never saw him studying when he visited us during his vacations. It was only after he cleared his MBBS in 2010 and came to stay with us for UPSC preparation that I realised that he works hard,” his father said.

“I have represented Nabinagar thrice in the Assembly and was once elected MP from even Aurangabad. Despite having strong political background, Vivek never wanted to pursue my career and I never interfered in his studies too.” his father Virendra Singh said.

Educational Background

Vivek Kumar studied outside Bihar. He completed his 10th from Birla Public School in Pilani and 12th from Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram. Later, he joined Maulana Azad Medical College for pursing MBBS and completed it in 2010. Vivek Kumar is presently working at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital.

“He initially wanted to pursue an MD from the US, but there was some delay in getting a visa. By then, he expressed his interest to go for IAS. I told him it is tricky, but his mind was made,” the proud father said.

Attempts

Vivek Kumar cracked UPSC Exam in his third attempt. In his first attempt, he cleared the Preliminary Exam. He had cleared the Mains Exam in his earlier second bid too but failed to crack the Interview round. He added he was done with the examination and is not planning a fourth attempt. “I am happy with my rank,” Vivek Kumar said.

Preparation Strategy

Vivek Kumar says that he began his preparation for the Civil Services Exam in the last three-four years and managed to clear the Mains on both occasions but not the interviews. However, continued perseverance and hard work finally paid off this time.

His entire routine was totally different. Vivek Kumar studied at night and slept at mornings. He never cared about his health and his father had to ensure he ate on time.

Vivek Kumar said his two unsuccessful attempts did affect him but his family and friends help him cope with the pressure. Success in such examinations depends on how well you manage that pressure. My friends, relatives and family were my motivation.

“Despite being the son of a MLA, my father and mother ensured that I remained focused on my studies. They regularly monitored me and perhaps that helped me avoid turning into a brat”, Vivek Kumar declared.

Now, having cleared UPSC Exam, the doctor wishes to serve the people of Bihar if he get state cadre. He says having been born and brought up in Bihar, he understands the core issues well and perhaps may be able to serve even better.

Advice for Aspirants

Vivek Kumar advised future IAS aspirants from the state to keep working hard and be confident. “The examination pattern changes every year. So, it is important to study smart,” he said.

Adapa Karthik, a Doctor, who had topped the Indian Administrative Service Examination in 2008. As a topper, he was given the option to go to his hometown in Khammam, Andhra Pradesh but Adapa chose Ranikhet, as it was much more backward place and that’s the kind of place how he wanted to contribute and serve the nation.

IAS offers a tremendous opportunity for leadership and to work at the grass-root level. Adapa says, “never to ignore Prelims even after your Mains or your interview because when the results are out, you don’t have any time left for the next year’s Prelims”.

Educational Background

Adapa got a scholarship for his Post Graduation at both Harvard and Cambridge. He also got a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation scholarship for a PhD in Molecular Medicine at Harvard and Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Trust Commonwealth Shared Scholarship for his PhD in Cambridge. But Adapa gave up prestigious Harvard and Cambridge university scholarships to join the IAS.

Attempts by Adapa Karthik

Karthik, a doctor, had been selected for the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 2005 and 2007, in earlier two attempts but he let it pass too. However, in his third attempt his determination to be an IAS officer made him the All India Rank topper in 2008.

Karthik devoted six to eight hours a day, but more than the number of hours, it was the quality and consistency of his studies, which matters. He used to be very consistent with his reading.

Optional Subject

Adapa Karthik opted Zoology and Psychology as his optional paper. Having done medicine, which is Advanced Biology, he wanted to go back to his basics and study Zoology, which is Basic Biology.

Psychology because it was a new subject for him and he really worked so hard to fetch good marks.

Life as a Doctor

Dr. Adapa Karthik enjoyed being a doctor and in fact, continued to be a doctor even after becoming IAS. In his capacity as an administrator, he organised health camps, where he also served as a doctor. But what he realised is that as a doctor, the canvas you get to paint on is very small. Health is the only field where he can work in as a doctor.

‘Egg vendor’ gives free coaching to civil services aspirants in Bihar

Manoj Kumar Roy, now an Indian Ordnance Factory Service officer, sold eggs, worked as a vegetable vendor and even mopped the floors of an office to earn a living during his struggling days.
He sold eggs, worked as a vegetable vendor and even mopped the floors of an office to earn a living during his struggling days in Delhi. Sheer grit and hard work only helped Manoj Kumar Roy, who hails from Bihar, brave all odds and bag the 870th rank in the coveted central services exam in 2010.

Roy (35) – now an Indian Ordnance Factory Service (IOFS) officer – spends his weekends grooming poor students of his state to help them crack the UPSC exam.

“The service is absolutely free,” he said.

Roy travels 110km from Nalanda, where he is posted as an administrative officer at Rajgir Ordnance factory, to Patna every weekend.

“When I cracked the civil services in my fourth attempt, I thought about many youngsters who could not afford the costly coaching,” he said. “So I decided to extend my help to them.” Roy said he was lucky to get his first posting at Rajgir in his home state. “I was allotted the IOFS on the basis of my rank in the UPSC exam,” he said.

Roy started providing free coaching to deserving and poor children soon after he was posted at Rajgir. “Most of my students belong to poor or lower middle class families,” he said.

Roy’s mission is supported by his wife Anupama Kumari, a deputy collector in Patna City. “My wife has qualified the Bihar Public Service Examination,” he said. “I asked her to coach and share her experiences with my students. She readily agreed to my request.” Most of his successful students owe their success to Roy. Reshu Krishna, who scored the 13th rank in the BPSC examination and qualified for the post of deputy superintendent of police, said she had benefited immensely from Roy’s classes.

“Sir (Roy) used to teach us geography and general studies,” she said. “His tips were invaluable to all of us.” Arun Kumar, who came 390th in the same examination, said Roy inspired him to appear for the BPSC exam. “I came in contact with Roy sir during my college days,” he said. “When I failed to qualify in the UPSC examination and the Bihar Police’s recruitment test for sub-inspectors, Roy sir motivated me and helped me crack the state civil services examination,” Arun said.

As many as 45 students, who were trained by Roy, have qualified the recent combined BPSC exam of three batches
