Meet Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan IAS, AIR – 2, 2015

Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan, a 23-year-old IIT graduate has made the militancy-torn Jammu and Kashmir proud by earning the envious second rank in the UPSC Exams.

Shah Faesal had created history when he became the first Kashmiri to top the UPSC Exam in 2010. Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan met Mr Shah Faesal and took his advice on whether he should join the services. Having a long discussion and after that they arrived at a conclusion that Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan should join as well as appear again.

“So here I am….happy at the decision. I have already given IAS as my first choice and Jammu and Kashmir as my cadre preference. I believe that there is a lot of scope for me to do something for my people in the state,” says Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan.

Working for the grassroots and doing something for the society was the prime reason behind Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan to write Civil Service Exams. “Civil services give us the opportunity to work very closely for the people. Civil services has a distinction that you can not only work for the grassroots and the people but also with them,” Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan said.

Family Background of Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan

Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan belongs to Devipora-Mattan village in Anantnag district, 60 km south of Srinagar. He is a son of a Mohammed Shafi Khan, teaches economics at Government Girls Higher Secondary School Anantnag, Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan had an inclination for higher studies from his childhood. Such was his brilliance that he was awarded by the late president APJ Abdul Kalam as young scientist when he was in class 10. And that brilliance continued through his youth when he cracked prestigious IIT.

Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan became interested in joining IAS after Shah Faesal from the Kashmir valley topped Civil Services Examination in 2009.

“I am a proud father today. The best moment in a father’s life is when he is known by his children and today my son has given me this happiness. His hard work has paid rich dividends. Allah has listened to our prayers, nothing is possible with the will of Allah. He was a brilliant student from the childhood. He was awarded best young scientist award when he had participated in Science Congress. He later cracked IIT and then UPSC. But now he has earned second rank,” an excited father said”.

Educational Background

Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan did his schooling from Tyndale Biscoe School in Srinagar. He had made it to the IIT but did not join as he was offered a B-Tech course when he wanted to pursue BE. This acted as a catalyst for him to appear for the Civil Services and he qualified last year. Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan completed his Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh in July 2014.

Optional Paper

Despite being the science student, Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan chose Philosophy as his optional subject for Civil Services Exam. Last time also his optional subject was Philosophy and he continued with this subject in his second attempt too. In his first attempt he started studying seven months before the Preliminary Exams. And by the grace of Allah and blessing of his parents he cracked UPSC Exam.

Attempts

Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan had appeared previous year but his ranking was down (560) and, therefore, he was offered Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS). He joined but IAS was his first love and he planned to do both – join the training and appear again. The 23-year-old Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan scored second rank in his second attempt at the prestigious Civil Services Examinations. Delhi’s Tina Dabi topped the IAS exams 2015 by securing first position.

Preparation Strategy

Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan did not have a great exposure to coaching classes but he was confident that he can do it. Extensive reading and complete dedication made him realise his dream. “My grandfather has been biggest motivation for me, his hard work, passion and enthusiasm have been a great source of motivation for me,” says Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan.

Advice for Aspirants

Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan advised Kashmiri youth to “come out of their shell” and prepare hard, rather than “crib” about the difficulties they face. The Civil Service allows you a wide area to work, and makes you responsible.

Both Brother and Sister of Panipat Cleared the UPSC Exam

It was a special day in the Duhan household where the sister-brother duo Shalini and Alekh cleared the UPSC exam. The duo hail from Shahrmalpur village in Panipat district and have been studying together in Delhi for the Civil Services Exam.

While Shalini Duhan secured the 21st rank in her third attempt at cracking the prestigious entrance exam to country’s top administrative posts, whereas her brother Alekh got 483rd position in the first go.

Family Background of Shalini and Alekh

The duo comes from Shahrmalpur village in Panipat district. While their mother, is a government teacher in a school at Machroli village in this district and their father, Sunil Singh, is with the Central Industrial Security Force.

The 25-year-old Shalini Duhan credited her achievement to her family. “I wanted to show that a girl from middle class family of Haryana, which was known for its skewed sex ratio, can also make her family and state proud, if given the right atmosphere,” Shalini told.

Shalini Duhan of Panipat

After initial schooling at Shahrmalpur village, Shalini Duhan was enrolled at a premier school in Gannaur (Sonepat). She studied biomedical sciences at Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology at Murthal.

She had earlier cleared Civil Services exam in her first attempt in 2013 with a rank of 190th and started as an excise inspector as she has been selected for IRS. After which she set her eyes on a newer higher goal and she continued her efforts to improve her rank to get into the IAS. She again cracked the UPSC examination in 2014 again with the 100th position and was selected for the IPS. Every passing year she improved her rank who is now sure of getting an IAS posting as she has already been selected for IRS and IPS. She again took the exam in 2015 and got the 21st rank to realise her dream to become an IAS officer.

Shalini inspired her struggled brother Alekh Duhan to aspire high. “We prepared together and my experience helped my brother clear the exam,” Shalini said.

Alekh Duhan

Alekh Duhan cleared the UPSC examination in his first attempt with All India Rank 483. He is a B.Tech (Mechanical) graduate from Delhi College of Engineering. Hailing from Shaharmalpur village in Panipat district have been studying in Delhi for the Civil Services Exam.

Alekh Duhan said that though he has cleared the exam, he would write it again to improve his rank. He too, wants to be an IAS officer.

Inspiring Alekh to aspire high, Alekh Duhan told “Shalini helped me achieve the target, we studied together and she helped me to prepare, no doubt she gave me inspiration who further says that he will try again to give the test to improve his rank.”

Family Background

Artika Shukla was born and brought up in Varanasi. She lives in a resident of Gandhinagar, Naria. Her father Dr. Brijesh Shukla is a physician and a former secretary of the IMA. Her mother Lena is a housemaker who played a key role in gaining success. She is youngest among two siblings. Her eldest brother Gaurav Shukla, had cracked UPSC Civil Services in 2012 and got IAS. He is currently posted in Guwahati. Other elder brother Utkarsh Shukla is an officer of Indian Railway Traffic Services (IRTS).

Her elated father said, “It is a happy and proud moment for us. She had worked really hard and always been an intelligent student and also I am glad that luck was on her side. In fact, we used to give quite a high importance to education.”

Educational Background of Artika Shukla

Artika Shukla completed her schooling from St. John School, DLW, Varanasi. She was a throughout topper from this school. After schooling, she cracked Pre Medical Test and went to Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMCH), New Delhi for MBBS and completed in 2013. Dr. Artika Shukla has worked as an intern with Lok Nayak Hospital, Delhi and later joined Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh as a Junior Intern. Dr. Artika Shukla is currently pursuing doctor of medicine (MD) in Pediatrics from Chandigarh.

It was in 2013 when Artika Shukla decided to prepare for UPSC Civil Services. Aritka Shukla quited her MD paediatrics course in November 2014. “When I decided to opt out of the course to prepare for IAS, many people told me that it was a wrong decision and that I should give it a second thought. But, both me and my elder brother Utkarsh Shukla were firm and encouraged me and asked me to go ahead, this is what I wanted and started working hard for it,” Artika Shukla said.

Optional Paper

Artika Shukla chose Medical Science as her optional subject because she has indepth knowledge of it that helped her a lot in stunning success at UPSC Civil Services Examination, 2015 and has achieved All India Rank 4 in this highly prestigious competitive exam. She calls her brother as her source of inspiration. Artika Shukla also draws inspiration from former President the late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

Attempts

Dr. Artika Shukla is overwhelmed by attaining AIR 4 rank she secured in her very first attempt. “The feeling is yet to sink in. It is almost unbelievable. My phone has not stopped ringing ever since the results were declared and I am just too happy,” Artika Shukla said.

Preparation Strategy

It was in 2013 when Artika Shukla decided to prepare for UPSC Civil Services.  Artika Shukla said, “At first, I was contemplating how to proceed with it. But, then my brother really helped me with all materials so there was no need to join any coaching for preparations and sought all help and guidance from my brother. I managed to prepare for it while shuttling between Varanasi and Delhi and Chandigarh. Later in August last year, I joined test series for Mains Exams and also did some mock interviews in Delhi for interview preparation.” She has been in the Varanasi since March this year.

Artika Shukla happily credited her success to her brother Utsav Shukla who helped her to prepare for UPSC Exam and being her ‘pillar and support’ all throughout. She couldn’t afford to give much time for preparation and was completely relying on the inputs for preparation from her IAS brother. Her brother did lots of help and provided useful tips, including his GS notes.

Civil Services exam 2013 Topper Munish Sharma (AIR -2)

Delhi-based Munish Sharma have got second positions in Civil Services exam 2013
Sharma has a Bachelor of Science (Biochemistry) degree from Sri Venkateswara College, Delhi University. He got through the exam in the second attempt.
“I am very happy. My success is the result of hard work and the blessings of my teachers and my mother,” Sharma told PTI over the phone.

Munish has a Bachelor of Science (Biochemistry) degree from the Delhi University and an MBA degree from Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute. This was his second attempt at UPSC. “Civil Service was my true calling. I just want to give my best to the country,” he said. Munish, a resident of Harinagar, prepared for the exam while he worked at KPMG.

He opted Law as the optional paper in UPSC Mains exams and got 134 and 117 numbers in both papers out of maximum 250 marks in each.

Mr. Sharma started his preparation in an early stage of life, he began his preparation when he was in the sixth standard because of his early love for civil services. But, later he gave a break to his preparation as after graduation and MBA, he worked for 5 years in the private sector.

Munish Sharma took two attempts to become IAS with Rank 2 in civil services examination.

In the same year, Gaurav Agarwal has become the first male in the last four years to top the UPSC. He holds Bachelor of Technology (Computer Science) degree from IIT-Kanpur and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Management from IIM Lucknow.

The son of a daily wager, who, in his third attempt, secured the 343rd rank.

COIMBATORE: Five students from the region have made it to the civil services this year.

The standout performer among them is S Suresh Kumar, the son of a daily wager, who, in his third attempt, secured the 343rd rank. Kumar graduated in BSc plant biology from PSG college of Arts and Science and did his MA in defence studies from Madras University.

The 24-year-old, who chose political science and Tamil literature as his optional papers, started preparing for the UPSC examination while studying for his post graduation. He took tuitions and worked as a students’ reporter with a local magazine to make his ends meet. “My parents would never let any of us work. My mother began to sell food to make my ends meet,” says Suresh, who is now pursuing his M Phil at the South Asian University in Delhi.

Suresh’s father, M Subburaj, worked as a daily wager at a garment manufacturing firm. A few months he moved joined a relative’s firm as a salesman. Thenmozhi, his mother, would cook food for college students to supplement Subburaj’s income. Suresh’s brother, Sathish Kumar is pursuing graduation in a Coimbatore college.

For the political science paper and interviews, Suresh took the help of city-based Higher Studies Centre, which is run jointly by Coimbatore Corporation and Government Arts College. All the five candidates from the region selected for the services had got coached at the institute.

Suresh, who expects a posting in IAS or IFS, wants civil service aspirants not to lose heart with failure. “Hard work never fails. Be persistent in what you do,” he adds.
