Governor Generals and Viceroys of India

Lord Lansdowne (1888-94)

Lord Lansdowne succeeded Lord Dufferin in 1888. During his tenure, the second Indian Councils Act was passed in 1892 to meet the demand of Indian National Congress. A boundary line between British India and Afghanistan known as Durand Line was demarcated by Sir Mortimer Durand. Lansdowne was succeeded by Lord Elgin II (1894-99).
